Episode 114 - On the Go
Segment #2 - During the Adventure
Activity -
Preschool Passport Book
HERE'S WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
- Sturdy piece of cardboard (from a cereal box for example)
- Construction paper
- Velcro dots
- Markers, crayons
- Glue stick or glue
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Small clear plastic box with flip top - approx 4-inches x 2-1/2-inches (office supplies often come in them - or try a breath mint type tin)
- Hole punch
- Pipe cleaner
- Small photo of child
LET'S GET STARTED:
- Cut cardboard into a rectangle approximately 6-inches x 14-inches.
- Glue the small box about 1/2-inch from the right edge of the cardboard rectangle. Now, fold the left edge over to nearly meet up with the box.
- Make one more fold 1-inch from that fold to create the spine of the book.
- Punch two holes in the spine 1-inch from the top and bottom edges.
- Cut paper to fit the book adding an extra inch to allow the paper to be secured into the book spine.
- Your child can decorate the pages with drawings, photos or cut outs from travel brochures of upcoming places he will visit.
- Punch holes in each page to match up with the holes punched in the spine of the book. Pull a pipe cleaner through the holes in the pages and book spine and twist to secure the pages.
- For each page, create one "play piece" that is removable such as a cut out photo of grandma or the Statue of Liberty. Pieces should be small enough to store in the small box.
- Place a Velcro dot on the back of each play piece. Place the corresponding Velcro dot anywhere by the image on the book page.
- On the inside cover of the book, glue child's picture and add name, date and place of birth just like a real passport.
- Decorate the cover of the book to look like a passport.
- To use: Child can have fun putting the "play pieces" on the appropriate pages to become familiar with who or what he will see at the destinations of the upcoming trip. For extra fun, the child could have each page validated when he gets to each location. For instance grandma could sign and date "her" page when he arrives.
