Episode 127 - No Place Like Home
Segment #2 - Marble Maze
Activity - Maze in a Box
HERE'S WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
- Shoebox or the bottom of a cardboard giftbox
- Construction paper or craft foam
- Bendable straws
- Glue
- Marbles
LET'S GET STARTED:
- Cover the bottom of the box with one sheet of construction paper or craft foam cut to size and glue it in place.
- Next, be maze architects! Set the box in front of you lengthwise. Trim and bend a couple of straws and set them flat and at angles near the top two corners on the bottom of the box. These will be barriers where the marbles may eventually ricochet. Glue them in place.
- Then determine where the final goal will be near the barriers and write, “FINISH” with a marker on the game board. To create a path for the game, draw a route on the board with a pen from “FINISH” down to the bottom of the box where you write “START”.
- Arrange different cut straw lengths on the game board using your drawing as a guide. Be sure to include several dead ends along the way for a challenging course. When you reach your desired “Start” marble entry point at the bottom of the box and you’re satisfied with the design, glue the straw segments in place.
- When the glue is completely dry, play the game! Set a marble at “Start” and let her roll. For an extra challenge, time the contestants with a stopwatch. When you really get the hang of it, try getting through the maze without looking using verbal cues from siblings or mom and dad.
