Episode 128 - Practice Makes Perfect
Segment #1 - 3D Cardboard
Activity - 3D Cardboard

These are the basic instructions for creating a 3-D cardboard cactus. Your 3-D cardboard projects can keep growing. Make flowers to decorate a window, a tree to use in a child’s room or to hang family photos for a family reunion, and a playhouse from a refrigerator box for even bigger fun.

HERE'S WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

  • Cardboard
  • Pencil
  • Mitten
  • Clay pot
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Acrylic or tempera paint
  • Paint brush

LET'S GET STARTED:

  1. Have your child wear a mitten and place hand on the cardboard. Trace around the mitten to create a cactus shape. Place a clay pot at the bottom of the cactus and trace. Cut out the drawing. (An adult may need to help with cutting.)
  2. Trace the original onto another piece of cardboard and cut out the second shape. Color or paint both sides of each cutout, making them look as similar as possible.
  3. Mark the center point on each cutout. On one piece, cut a slit starting at the top of the cactus and going down to that mark. On the other, cut a slit from the bottom of the cactus going up to the mark. Slide one piece into the other.

Note: To reinforce the larger structures like the tree and playhouse, make a cardboard triangle, score it and attach near the top where the 2 pieces meet using brass fasteners.
