Episode 129 - Indoor Gardening
Segment #1 - 3D Terrarium
Activity - Shark-erarium

HERE'S WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

  • Two liter plastic soda bottle with lid
  • Scissors
  • Clean small pebbles for drainage
  • Charcoal which prevents odor (available at garden stores)
  • Potting soil
  • Small plants for terrariums such as miniature ferns
  • Craft items to decorate your bottle like stickers, paint, glue, foam sheets

LET'S GET STARTED:

  1. Clean bottle, remove label and allow to dry.
  2. Set bottle on its side and cut out a 2-inch-by-6-inch rectangle lengthwise where the label was removed. The opening will be at the top of the terrarium.
  3. Glue a wooden bead to the outside of the cutout for a handle. Decorate bottle.
  4. Pour a 1/2-inch layer of small pebbles into the bottle.
  5. Next, pour a 1/2-inch layer of charcoal.
  6. Last, top off with at least 1-inch of potting soil.
  7. Plant small, nonpoisonous indoor plants in the soil.
  8. Water sparingly right after planting. A mister works well.
  9. Decorate your bottle with paints or foam sheet designs.
  10. Insert bead cutout in the opening of your mini ecosystem to retain moisture.
