Episode 102 - It's In a Book
Segment #4 - Kids Become Writers/Publishers
Activity - Masked Word Poetry HERE'S WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
- Pages from old discarded books - larger print works best
- Scissors
- Masking tape or painters tape
- Paint
- Paintbrushes
- Miscellaneous craft items for embellishment
- For book cover idea: drill, ribbon, and paper punch
LET'S GET STARTED:
- Read over your old page and select a few words that you think will make a nice poem.
- Place small pieces of masking tape over the chosen words. Test the tape first to be sure words remain when you peel off the tape. (Use the sticky section of self-stick notes as an alternative to the tape.) Trim to the size of the word.
- Paint over the entire page with a thin coat of poster paint. Use contrasting colors to paint a person, animal, object or abstract design to illustrate the theme of your poem.
- Let dry completely.
- Find the tape or self-stick note pieces that are now covered with paint and carefully peel them away to magically reveal the words of your poem.
- Make several and bind in a book or... frame one and hang on your wall or give as a gift.
Note: We bound several in an old book cover that we decorated. We decoupaged tissue paper onto the old cover. To bind the book, drill two holes through the front and back cover one inch from top and bottom edges. Punch holes in your poem pages to align with the book cover holes.
