Episode 130 - Simply Extraordinary
Segment #1 - Fountains
Activity - Clay Pot with Marbles Fountain

HERE'S WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

• Fountain pump (available at hardware and discount stores)
• Pump tubing to fit the drainage hole diameter snuggly in the bottom of your clay pot
• Clay pot with drainage hole
• Clay drainage tray without hole, which is larger than the size of the pot
• Marbles
• Strong metal file tool

LET'S GET STARTED:

  1. Place pump in center of drainage tray. Set the clay pot upside down onto the tray covering the pump.
  2. Mark where the pump cord hits the rim of the pot and file away a small notch on the rim of the pot to allow the cord enough clearance space when the pot is upside down.
  3. Place the pot upside down on the tray over the pump. Push the pump tubing up through the hole in the pot so that water will eventually flow out of that hole. Direct the electric cord through the notch you made.
  4. Arrange marbles on the tray around the pot.
  5. Fill the tray with clean water, making sure the water flows under the pot to the pump. Turn on the pump and watch the water flow gently over the pot. If enough water does not seem to be getting to the pump, create a few more notches around the rim of the pot. Always keep sufficient clean water in the fountain and keep the fountain out of reach of young children and pets.
