Episode 130 - Simply Extraordinary
Segment #2 - Micro Mâche
Activity - Micro Mâche

HERE'S WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

• Microwave safe glass bowls, vases, or plates
• Newspaper
• Plastic wrap
• Mixing bowl
• Flour
• Water
• Acrylic Paints
• Microwave

LET'S GET STARTED:

  1. 1 Wrap plastic around the outside of the microwave safe container you wish to use as a mold for your papier-mache bowl.
  2. Tear newspaper into strips about 1 inch by 2 inches in size.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, stir together 2 cups of water with 1 cup of all-purpose white flour to make the goop.
  4. Dip the newspaper strips one by one into the goop, slide off excess with your fingers and lay them on the outside of the plastic covered container. Cover completely with 3 layers of strips. (Do not cover the inside of your container.)
  5. Place the container in the microwave and heat on high for 1-2 minutes, depending on the size of the container.
  6. An adult should remove it from the microwave and pat down any air bubbles that have formed.
  7. Place it in the microwave again for 1-2 minutes, watching to make sure that the paper does not begin to scorch. Keep an eye on it at all times.
  8. Continue this process until the container is completely dry.
  9. Cool, then carefully remove the container you used as a mold from the new papier mache.
  10. Let dry completely.
  11. Paint papier mache bowl with acrylic paints in fun colors and designs.

Note: For decorative use only.
