Episode 130 - Simply Extraordinary
Segment #4 - Coffee Filter Flowers
Activity - Coffee Filter Flowers
HERE'S WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
• Round pleated paper coffee filters
• Food coloring
• Muffin tin
• Rubber gloves
• Water
• Paintbrush, sponge brush
• Drinking straws
• Eyedropper
• Newspaper
LET'S GET STARTED:
- Cover work area with layers of newspaper. Wear disposable plastic gloves on hands if you wish.
- Fill muffin tin sections with water and place several drops of food coloring into each, mixing shades to make your own palette.
- Fold coffee filter into small sections as if you were making a snowflake out of paper.
- Dip ends of filter into food coloring. It only takes a moment for it to soak in.
- To apply drops of coloring, use an eyedropper or paintbrush. Each time you apply a color , watch it spread to form unique patterns.
- Unfold filter and hang to dry. (If you do this indoors, be sure to have newspaper underneath your line to catch any drips).
Display ideas for dyed flowers:
Cut petal edges on a dyed coffee filter. Glue center of filter to a deli serving spoon and glue child's photo to center to create a cute flower. Push spoon handle into a painted pot filled with sand and give as gift.
Gather and pinch the center of the filter to form a bloom. Set an 18-inch piece of strong wire at the base of the bloom where flower is pinched together. Twist a pipe cleaner around tightly to hold the bloom and the wire together. Fan out flower. Make several. Pound small holes into a piece of wood and insert opposite ends of wires to display.
