Activity - Sock Baby Invitations
These cute invitations can be used for a baby shower or a baby's birthday. (See more ideas following instructions.)
HERE'S WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
- 1 colorful cotton knit toddler-size sock
- Fiberfill or other lightweight stuffing material to fill the sock
- 1 yard of ¼-inch colorful grosgrain or other sturdy ribbon
- 1/4-inch pompom for the top of the cap
- Fabric glue or needle and thread for the pompom
- Nontoxic fabric markers
- Colorful construction paper or poster board
- Scissors
- Markers
- Clean, snack-size potato-chip can with lid
- Packaging tape
LET'S GET STARTED:
- Fill sock with stuffing material until the stuffing reaches up to the beginning of the cuff (make sure the heel portion is filled).
- Cinch the sock closed where the cuff begins, and tie it tightly together with ribbon.
- Fold the cuff over the top portion of the stuffed sock to create the look of a stocking cap. Fold the edge up one turn. Glue a pompom on top if you wish.
- Draw two eyes below the cap with fabric markers. Tie a ribbon around the midpoint of the body, cinching it slightly.
- Slide the ribbon through the tag, which includes the party details, knot the ribbon and tie a bow.
- Cover the outside of chip can with construction paper.
- Write address of guest on outside.
- Place sock baby invitation into chip can and attach lid. Tape lid to keep it secure.
- Bring to post office to weigh for postage.
Variations:
MILESTONE BABIES
Challenge your preschool or school-age child to be on the lookout for some of baby's "firsts," such as first big smile, first word, first haircut, first game of peekaboo, etc. Once a "first" has been identified, make a small, stuffed sock baby together and call them "Milestone Babies". Make and decorate a can for each one. Display babies in child's room. As she gets older remove and frame tags to keep a record of the firsts and the child can play with them. Due to small parts, the "Milestone Babies" should be kept out of reach of children 4 and under.
SNOWMAN INVITATION:
Use a white sock, follow above steps for sock babies. Add twig arms and a little hat for a snowman invitation to a winter party.
